Online dating has become socially acceptable today, which means there are a greater number of false profiles and scammers out there.  For every happy story you hear about that married couple who met online, you hear a devastating account of someone who was led astray by someone they met online.  Take these stories for example:

In Texas, a man was recently arrested as he attempted an act of revenge on his ex-girlfriend by creating false online dating profiles in her name that cast her in bad light.  The man is being charged with the third degree felony of online impersonation.  Another man was recently arrested in London after he defrauded multiple victims he met on Internet dating sites.  One woman was even fooled enough to send the man $221,000 when he claimed to need financial assistance.  The tales of financial fraud of this nature are abound, and nearly every day there is a new crime reported that follows this pattern of the offender tugging on heartstrings to get money sent their way.

To help spot these scammers and avoid being a victim yourself, here are a few online services that will help.

Zidelity is a website that offers a tool to help two people demonstrate their fidelity, thus leading to honest relationships.  This is not a dating site, but it seeks to complement existing services by allowing users to weed out exaggerated profiles or scammers without conducting a formal background check.  Not to mention, background checks may not tell the whole truth since they will only reveal if the person is married.  Zidelity presents tests and scenarios to users to help them reveal that they are genuinely real people not in any relationships.  The site is also carefully constructed to ensure users cannot have multiple profiles.  Zidelity is a relatively new tool, and registration is currently free.  Give it a whirl and let us know in the comments how it is!

Background check by Been Verified is a free mobile app for Android and iPhone, if you insist on performing a routine checkup on someone you meet online.  This comprehensive app lets you search by name or email address to pull records such as family ties, property records, criminal background, and even social media accounts.  It’s no cost to download the app and run one report per month.  Each additional report is $0.99 each.  Seems a little too easy, and even borderline creepy doesn’t it?  Perhaps, but remember that most of the information the app pulls is publicly available somewhere on the Web.

Date Tracker Alert is a mobile app for iPhone and Android that can save the day in the event of a real date gone bad.  Say your date passed the Background Check and Zidelity tests, but when you meet in person, there’s an unavoidably creepy vibe.  Date Tracker is a simple tool to make sure end up safe at home at the end of the night.  Prior to embarking on your first date, simply enter the location of the date, set a time to check in, and designate an emergency contact or two.  If you don’t check back into the app by the appropriated time, the app sends an alert to your contact.  It’s quick to set up and easy to correct if you simply lose track of time and forget to check in.  Always better safe than sorry!

If you’re the type who tends to forget Valentine’s Day, the Kiss My Valentine app for Android is for you!  Serving as a calendar and notepad, this app helps you keep track of your Valentine’s Day shopping list and program your phone to send scheduled SMS kisses, hugs, and notes of affection to your loved ones.  Download it before Feb. 14, 2012, and it’s free!

American Greetings already offers a mobile eCard app and has recently launched JustWink.  This free greeting card app for iPhone and Android allows users to send personalized eCards to friends via their social networks.  If your beau isn’t a huge fan of Valentine’s Day or greeting cards, try the Cerebral Itch app, which offers quirky, untraditional eCards reserved only for those with a sense of humor.

Dinner Dates

Hopefully you’ve already made dinner reservations on this popular date, but if not, here are a few resources to help you out.  Yelp and Urban Spoon offer great dining and cocktail recommendations based on user reviews.   Open Table allows you to make your reservations online, which is helpful for weeding out the places that are already booked without having to make too many calls.  Most big name restaurants from large cities are listed on the site, but you’ll have to go the traditional route of making reservations if your choice joint isn’t listed.  Best of all, Open Table, Yelp, and Urban Spoon all have mobile apps, so if your top choice falls through, you can find a runner up on the spot.

If you’re opting to stay in and do some home cooking for your date, first off, props on the creativity!  Next, here are some apps to help you figure out what to cook.  All Recipes is already a great database of delicious meal ideas, but now they’ve got special Valentine’s Day recommendations and a handy, free iPhone app called the Dinner Spinner.  This app spits out recipes based on what ingredients you have and a time frame.  Whole Foods Market has a similar recipe recommendation iPhone app (also free), but it also sorts results based on dietary restrictions such as gluten-free, low fat, vegetarian, etc.

Date Ideas

The classic dinner and a movie date will never die, but there are many other creative ideas out there for your night of romance.  Nifty Date Ideas is an iPhone app that suggests dozens of date ideas and conversation starters (hopefully you won’t need the latter!), along with a fun video scavenger hunt you can play if all else fails. Hot Date Ideas is a website that suggests just that.  Indoor stargazing, anyone?

Recent trending celebrity headlines are going wild about Demi Moore being encouraged by Jennifer Aniston to try online dating.  This story is leaking more incidences about celebrities who have used online dating as early as 2006.  Hollywood stars who have admitted to searching for love online include Joan Rivers, Chace Crawford, and Rivers Cuomo, to name a few.  If these Hollywood hotties are actually on sites like Ok Cupid, that means John Doe on Match.com who breaks all of the traditional online dating profile rules by not posting a photo or disclosing details about his personal life might actually be Zac Efron or some other famous bachelor looking for love.  Or he could turn out to be a psycho impersonator.  Would you break every online dating rule pertaining to safety and honesty to literally go on a blind date with a supposed celebrity? Let’s take a look at a few celebrities who have claimed to use online dating.

Carrie-Ann Inaba, Dancing with the Stars judge, told Access Hollywood that she met her fiancé Jesse Sloan on eHarmony.  She reportedly had a minimalist dating profile that excluded photos and any personal details; she simply stated what she was searching for in a relationship.  The romantic is you is probably saying, “wow! That means her fiancé must truly love her since they met before he knew she was famous!”  Meanwhile, the rest of you are thinking, “what an idiot! With all of these online dating scams, that was incredibly dangerous!”

We think both assertions have their merits, but when celebrities are going undercover when they use dating sites, it’s no surprise they have very little luck.  Halle Berry admitted to Contact Magazine, “I am never who I am,” referring to a time when she would check out dating sites just to see what people were talking about.  It’s no wonder she claimed to have had very little success.  Orlando Bloom has even admitted to using a friend’s name and photo to fill out his online dating profile.  How deceptive is that? Although we’re sure nearly any lady on Match.com would count herself lucky if she unintentionally scored a date with a movie star.

It’s no secret that online dating is growing increasingly dangerous as more people are being scammed and set up, so it’s always important to heed safety tips.  It’s easy to understand that celebrities go undercover because they don’t want to attract potential dates on their status alone.  However, think about how upset you were when you discovered that John Doe was hardly who he claimed to be in his dating profile.  If celebrities can receive legal exemptions (ahem, Lindsay Lohan), would you excuse their using fake identities in their online dating profiles?  Tell us your opinions in the comments!

Dating after a divorce or breakup is never easy, but for some, online dating can help restore confidence and self-esteem.  For those already familiar with online dating, think about how many messages or winks you amassed during the first few days you joined your online dating site of choice.  How sexy did you feel just seeing the amount of attention you were receiving?

Sharyn Bires of Huffington Post addressed this exact instance in her story, “From Rock Bottom to Loving Online.“  Bires found personal success and restored self confidence when she immediately jumped into online dating following a sudden breakup with her fiance.   Says Bires, “there is no better way to heal after a breakup than to go online and be reminded that there is a city full of men who would love to take you out.” Even Hollywood celebs such are jumping on board with this idea.  In a recent statement, Jennifer Aniston encouraged Demi Moore to try online dating to help her cope with her recent split from Ashton Kutcher.  Other celebrities who have tried online dating include Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, and even Joan Rivers.

If you’re newly single and considering giving online dating a go, we definitely think you should, but first be wary if a few things.

• Think about what kind of relationship you are realistically ready for. Are you really looking for a long-term relationship, or is a “friends only” scenario better for you?
• Remember that honesty is still key.  Even if you’re not looking for a real relationship yet, don’t use an online dating service to create a fake persona.  That’s what chat rooms and forums are for.
• Be able to come up with a quick non-emotional explanation about your breakup.  Talking about your past relationships is a common first date topic.  Be prepared.
• Answer the question: How soon is too soon? Before you plan to meet up with someone you met online, make sure this is something you are emotionally prepared for.  We all hear dating horror stories about that one girl who could only talk about her ex on the first date.  Don’t be that person.
• Spend time with your friends.  The age-old advice to help get over a breakup is to turn to your friends.  It’s the best way to remember you don’t need a romantic relationship to be true to yourself.

Start the new year off right by taking a look at your online dating profile and making sure it’s engineered for success!  When you’re online dating, your personal profile is your greatest selling point.  To make it attractive for potential dates, here are a few tips for creating an irresistible online dating profile.

DO be truthful.

The number one complaint among online daters is the tendency for people to stretch the truth or just plain lie in their dating profiles.  We’re not talking about listing all of your pet peeves or bad habits; that’s simply TMI.  But if you have kids or were previously married, it’s wise to say so from the get-go rather than drop the bomb after a few dates.  If you are seeking a serious relationship, tell the truth; any lies are bound to be revealed sooner or later.

DO add clear profile photos.

As a general rule, humans are visual creatures.  Even if you write a stellar profile, you’re less likely to get noticed unless you have a few profile photos. You can do this yourself if you have the proper set up, or maybe invest in some quality headshots if you’re really serious (these could be used for your LinkedIn profile too).   After all, the phrase “eye candy” exists for a reason.

DO NOT write a novel.

Even though we encourage you to tell the truth, the last thing you should do is write too much in your profile.  After all, if you reveal too much, there leaves less to  talk about on the first date.  A good guideline is to stick with your dating service’s general profile questions and write no less than 3 sentences and no more than 5.  Be thoughtful and truthful when you type an answer, but don’t ramble.

DO NOT forget to proofread.

Think of your dating profile as an advertisement.  If it’s full of typos and basic grammar errors, it will be hard for anyone to take you seriously.  Take advantage of the spell check features in Microsoft Word or Gmail.  Better yet, ask a close friend to review your profile and offer suggestions.

DO NOT copy someone else’s profile.

If you’re stumped for the words to answer a profile question, do not copy and paste text from another person’s profile or online dating profile examples.  Imagine how embarrassing it would be if you were discovered.  Not only is it unoriginal to copy someone’s answers, but it probably isn’t the best answer for you anyway.  A better suggestion is to ask a friend, relative, or someone who knows you well to answer the question for you.  Ask them to describe your best qualities or what kind of significant other they think you should have in your life.

It’s easy to make a fuss about the trend of job recruiters performing background checks via social networking.  However, have you stopped to think that other people who matter might be watching your Facebook statuses and Tweets as well? Think about what happens after you meet someone new, especially if you find them attractive.  One of the first things you’ll likely do is try to find them on Facebook.  If not just to verify they were as cute as you thought, Facebooking a stranger is also a way to filter that person for ideal qualities.  Some might call this unfair and judgmental, but others call it necessary research.  No matter what side you’re on, it’s still important to make sure your Facebook profile conveys the right message about who you are when you are actively online dating.

Update Your Facebook Profile

The first thing you should do is make sure all of your profile information is current.  If you created a Facebook account years ago and haven’t logged in a while, do yourself a favor and check it out.  It’s not an excuse to have a profile from 2005 that says you’re in a relationship and working at Pizza Hut.  Provide the bare essentials of a real, searchable name in the correct city you live in.  Some Facebook users elect to use obscure names so certain people can’t find them.  We can’t tell you not to do this, but again, think about what a prospective date might think if you can’t be found on Facebook.

Get rid of the ex.  Even if you are on friendly terms, think hard about the message conveyed by those old Facebook love notes and happy couple pics.  In case you’re wondering, a new lover won’t find it cute or amusing; instead, he or she will take those remnants as a sign you’re not ready to move on.  Better yet, take advantage of a browser plug-in called Block Your Ex, which will do exactly that.

2. Check out your Facebook profile photo.  What does your profile photo convey? If it’s a pic of you partying in Vegas with a bunch of babes, chuck the photo immediately.  Don’t even keep it in your album, just get it off your profile. 3. 4. Facebook Security Settings

5. Friends being in relationships with friends.  It might sound obvious, but make sure your relationship status says ‘Single’ or nothing at all.  Even if you have a fake Facebook relationship with a friend as a joke, think about removing it while you’re actively looking for something serious.  In some cases, you might be able to explain it to your date, but some people will judge (fancy that!) and make assumptions with no questions ask.  It’s better to fare on the safe side.

6. Censor or clarify photos and wall posts that involve you and your friends.  Some people are so close with their siblings or best friends that the Facebook relationships they have with those people can be somewhat questionable.  We all know the two girls who are so close they post “I love you!!” on each others’ walls and sometimes take provocative photos together.  Even if they’re not romantically linked, an unsuspecting person looking at their profile might think so.  Apply this logic to yourself. Think about removing questionable content, or at least make it clear that the guy who is pictured in half your profile pics is your cousin not your lover, or the baby you’re holding is your niece not your daughter.  You never know what people will assume based on what they see.

The thing to remember is social media can be a double-edged sword.  It’s great for making new connections and commemorating good times.  But remember that it’s not just recruiters who do background checks–your prospective Mr. or Miss.
